Plumb Design Awarded Contract to Build Next Generation eLearning Service for onCourse
Partnership to Make Public Television Content available in Schools Nationwide
New York, January 14, 2002—Plumb Design, Inc., today announced it has been awarded a contract to develop a comprehensive K-12 e-learning application for onCourse, a digital education service provided by America's 350 public television stations and their community teachers, parents, and classroom students.
onCourse is an organization created by public broadcasting and education leaders with a single objective: to offer a diversified, rich repository of digital Public Television content, tied to state standards, to better engage students of all learning abilities.
Over the past four decades, public television stations have produced high-quality programming and related course materials in science, math, literature, civics, the arts and virtually every other subject. Today, the same public broadcasting organizations that transformed learning in the television age, are leveraging new digital distribution capabilities to channel their rich resources and expertise to transform learning in the information age. The goal is to make those programs and course materials more readily available to teachers and learners regardless of income or geographic location. onCourse is cataloging and digitizing thousands of hours of programs, with a more comprehensive method for state standard correlation, to make them available as part of the service.
Plumb Design has been engaged to build the onCourse K-12 distance learning portal that provides access to "learning objects"—short, curriculum-focused educational segments correlated to state standards and educational outcomes. Together with onCourse, Plumb Design will build an online search and discovery tool, leveraging its proprietary "Thinkmap" technology application enabling teachers to search and browse for public television content and related educational material with immediacy and greater relevancy to standards of learning.
onCourse is the first educational institution to use this innovative search technology. Users will be able to assemble educational material and lesson plans, preview videos in low-resolution, and schedule them for delivery to the classroom in or near-broadcast quality. The onCourse service will be based on a comprehensive metadata schema compatible with SCORM and other emerging standards in educational technology.
"Plumb Design is a company made up of premiere information architects, that offer an ideal blend of information design and technology skills," said Lou Pugliese, CEO of onCourse. "We're excited to be the first organization to optimize this tool for the benefit of educators nationwide. Thinkmap is an exciting technology that is capable of presenting our information in a way that is easy for teachers to use. OnCourse will set a new benchmark for comprehensive metadata and rich media search for K-12."
"onCourse is poised to become the leading service for high-quality, engaging learning content developed for K-12 education," noted Carsten Wierwille, Vice President, Client Partner at Plumb Design. "We are thrilled about this unique opportunity to transform the way teachers and students access information instrumental to the process of teaching and learning." The onCourse service will be introduced in selected schools in the academic year 2003/04.
